Final Casual Splash

This was the final Casual Splash event thrown by my friend Ray at the beloved Ithaca venue The Downstairs. The day before Thanksgiving always draws a huge crowd.

I custom made the shirt for this event, it says “Move Thru Loss”, and the set from that night was composed to begin with a more melancholic / darker beginning and progress towards a celebratory / bittersweet ending.

The closing track, “Children (Dreams version)” by Robert Miles was among some of the first records I acquired, many years ago. IYKYK. It was a 1995 release, and the bittersweet vulnerability of it seemed like the right note to close on.

Additionally, the cacaphonous transition from Conjure One’s “Redemption (Max Graham’s Dead Sea Remix)” to “Sunshine Underground” by the Chemical Brothers (occurring around 55:00 onwards) was a particularly challenging, but personally satisfying, mix.

Annual DJ Cookout

My friend Rob (Rob Haze) has been throwing the annual DJ Cookout every year for over a decade (Nate (MVSTRNTE) has been co-producing it in the past two years). It’s an all-day indoor/outdoor event that is meant to be a celebration of the art of DJing and to give us all an opportunity to connect with each other.

This year, I had a funny idea for an experiment: What if I put my crate on the stage and let the audience hand me records from it and I play them in whatever order they hand them to me? DJs are notoriously reluctant (at times combatively) to take requests – what if I did an “Oops all requests!” set?

HarriSYNTHburg

Ivan / Jaguardini from Harrison, WV came through Ithaca on a tour. He invited me to come out and play his event in WV sometime. It was a fantastic experience, overall. The crowd was really feeling it, and I ended up having to improvise the last 15-20 minutes of the set (humble brag:) because he had me play over my set time.

Cedarwood Venue

Nate (MVSTRNTE) threw several events at Cedarwood Venue this year and I was honored to get to play at two of them.

The Middlelakes Festival event was a particularly meaningful one since I was able to bring my two teenagers. They aren’t really into electronic music, but it was Father’s Day weekend and I asked if they would come see me play. :)

One of these was the “Dancey & Arty House Party” which has a recorded set

Microtones (IU Fundraiser)

Chris (Glitterskulls) does an annual fundraiser for Ithaca Underground, and this one was held at Forest City Lodge, a frequent spot for electronic music events. Whoisbriantech and I both played that night.
